0:00 here's Mary Galo good evening and
0:03 welcome to 16x9 the bigger picture you
0:06 can't see it you can't taste it but some
0:09 are calling it a serious health threat
0:11 every parent should know about WiFi
0:14 wireless internet is in schools Coast to
0:16 Coast but why do some kids say Wi-Fi is
0:19 making them sick in a 16x9 investigation
0:23 we put Wi-Fi to the test here's our
0:25 Carolyn
0:28 Jarvis they Gathering by the hundreds
0:31 hacking a public forum in Toronto
0:33 filling a school board meeting in
0:35 Peterboro I don't know what I'm going to
0:36 do if you if you have Wi-Fi in there I
0:38 just I can't I can't do this to my
0:40 daughter I cannot put her through this
0:42 experiment and assembling at a church in
0:44 Vancouver a fever pitch building over
0:47 what they see as a threat invisible to
0:49 the Eye Society in general uh doesn't
0:52 want to lose a convenience at the
0:54 expense of safety they're talking about
0:56 radiation exposure from Wi-Fi or
0:59 Wireless internet and their concern it's
1:02 making their kids sick I just think that
1:04 we don't know so why risk it today
1:07 schools across the country are rushing
1:09 to install it but these students say the
1:11 convenience isn't worth the risk I had
1:14 heart racing headaches nauseous it's a
1:17 really weird feeling weak and I'm really
1:20 shaky and when they're not at school
1:22 does it happen on the weekends no
1:24 there's no Rhyme or Reason to the
1:26 symptoms they range from headaches to
1:27 nausea heart palpitations even
1:30 rashes so 16x9 wanted to find out
1:34 exactly what if any threat exists in
1:36 schools so we went with this man
1:38 industry tester cavinder Dylan to
1:40 measure the radiation levels in a
1:42 typical Wireless classroom is it fair to
1:44 say that this would give us an average
1:45 sample size of what we'd be seeing in a
1:47 typical classroom um yes we're going to
1:50 be concentrating on this area so this
1:52 will basically be give us what the
1:54 proportional rate is to simulate an
1:55 actual classroom we set up each computer
1:57 to stream video constantly receiving
2:00 information from the devices that are
2:02 being uh set up right now and we got our
2:04 antennas uh hooked up and we're getting
2:06 the real life signals with the
2:07 correction factors from the antennas and
2:09 the cable losses right now we are
2:11 basically uh
2:13 113.8k
2:15 so in effect according to Health Canada
2:18 this classroom would be deemed safe um
2:20 according to the criteria yes so next we
2:22 go out into the hallway to check the
2:23 router one of several in the school
2:25 fixed to the ceiling the levels here hit
2:27 2600 microwatts 20 times the reading
2:31 inside the classroom people who are
2:32 actually in Industry who are testing
2:34 this they they they feel this is a high
2:36 limit this is this is very high really
2:39 you heard them our industry tester calls
2:41 that level high but it's still well
2:43 within Canada's safety guideline now
2:46 that guideline is a thing called Safety
2:48 Code 6 it sets the limit for radio
2:50 frequency radiation exposure and Health
2:53 Canada says there's no way the levels we
2:55 found are causing those headaches and
2:57 heart palpitations and Beth Peterson of
2:59 Health Canada says the science backs it
3:02 up there's no evidence scientific
3:04 evidence that those kind of effects are
3:06 caused by the energy um limits that kids
3:09 are exposed to by Wi-Fi Health Canada
3:11 sets the limit at 10 million microwatts
3:13 per meter squared now that might not
3:15 mean much to most of us but in 2008
3:18 Toronto's Board of Health said it's way
3:20 too high and asked Canada's Minister of
3:22 Health in this letter for much stricter
3:24 regulations a 100 times more strict
3:28 Health Canada never changed the thing
3:30 still no matter what any guideline says
3:32 these parents say they've seen it for
3:34 themselves and Wi-Fi is harming their
3:37 kids so she had to hold on to friends in
3:40 order not to collapse on the floor she
3:43 had headaches and we're not talking just
3:44 regular headaches they were extreme
3:45 headaches where the secretary would call
3:47 me I'd have to come pick her up
3:49 according to this doctor there's good
3:51 reason to believe these kids are telling
3:52 the truth and not just making up some
3:54 excuse to skip school there's no
3:56 question in my mind it exists Dr
3:58 Jennifer Armstrong specialized in
4:00 environmental medicine the big thing
4:02 with kids is they're more vulnerable why
4:04 children are more vulnerable their
4:05 skulls are thinner their their bodies
4:08 are not um as strong as ours in in
4:11 general they're developing their brains
4:13 are developing so you expose children to
4:17 radiation and their little bodies don't
4:19 handle it as well and cardiologist Dr
4:21 Steven Sinatra agrees as a parent if I
4:25 had a young child would I want to use my
4:27 child as an experiment to see if it's
4:28 going to take 30 years or 20 years or 10
4:30 years they become sick no not me but and
4:33 the thing is we have to sacrifice
4:35 accelerated education and convenience
4:38 and basically we have to look at the
4:40 safety of our children we have to do it
4:42 as a society well 16 by 9 wanted to test
4:45 the power of Wi-Fi so we went to visit
4:48 environmental scientist Magda Havis from
4:50 Trent University to do another test
4:53 Professor havas's subject Martin who
4:55 calls himself electrically sensitive is
4:57 hooked up to a heart monitor and Havis
4:59 sets up a wireless computer well what
5:01 we're going to be doing is we're going
5:02 to be taking Martin and exposing him to
5:06 microwave radiation from Wi-Fi the same
5:08 type of thing that we have in schools
5:09 for example and just monitoring his
5:11 heart to see if his heart reacts to any
5:13 of the radiation he won't know when
5:15 things are turned on or off so it's
5:16 going to be a blind study in that regard
5:18 with the Wi-Fi plugged in Martin's heart
5:20 rate accelerates in mere moments now I
5:23 can feel something it's going through my
5:26 chest I feel it down in my legs too the
5:29 closer the router is the greater his
5:31 reaction um a few seconds ago it was
5:33 like my chest was actually jumping in
5:36 the middle here then seconds after the
5:38 wireless internet is unplugged just like
5:41 that his heart rate slows down Martin
5:43 how are you feeling right now fine I
5:46 don't think there's anything on but
5:48 listen to this those levels Martin was
5:50 exposed to well they're acceptable
5:52 according to Safety Code six so if
5:54 they're safe why was his heart racing
5:57 Magda Havis has a theory so some
5:59 percentage of the population is reacting
6:02 to these microwave uh radiation at
6:05 levels well below Safety Code 6 but I'm
6:07 not sick from Wi-Fi and I use it all the
6:09 time well not everyone has the same
6:11 sensitivities we have children who have
6:12 peanut allergies we have uh people who
6:15 are allergic to uh pollen they react to
6:17 pollen and it's same with electrical
6:20 sensitivity only uh a percentage of the
6:22 population react still Health Canada
6:25 insists it's done its homework looked at
6:27 every bit of Science and that level of
6:28 radiation won't hurt anybody our safety
6:31 limits are set on we use a weight of
6:32 evidence approach so there are thousands
6:35 of Articles thousands of peer reviewed
6:38 scientific articles on the issue 16 by 9
6:41 wanted to take a look at that evidence
6:43 so we asked Health Canada for its science
6:45 they sent us this a list of 16 studies
6:49 entitled specific to Wi-Fi so we did our
6:51 own homework going through every study
6:54 and not a single one looks at whether
6:56 Wi-Fi in schools poses a health risk to
6:59 students
7:00 AA says since Health Canada isn't
7:02 controlling Wi-Fi parents are going to
7:04 have to so are you suggesting that
7:06 parents should tell their kids a
7:07 13-year-old or 14-year-old who may be
7:09 attached to his laptop or his iPad you
7:12 should stop using that it may not go
7:13 over so well but you know when children
7:15 want to smoke and if you're a
7:16 responsible parent you allow your your
7:17 13-year-old child to smoke in my mind
7:20 there's no difference between the two if
7:21 anything um I think maybe microwave
7:24 radiation is going to show up to be much
7:26 more harmful than smoking simply because
7:28 of the amount of of exposure that we're
7:30 we're seeing in our everyday environment
7:32 so how about the people who make these
7:34 products we asked to speak to Wi-Fi
7:36 manufacturers about the possible health
7:38 effects but they declined our request
7:40 for an interview the organization that
7:42 represents them the Wi-Fi Alliance did
7:45 however provide 16 x 9 with this written
7:47 statement Wi-Fi technology meets all
7:50 national and international safety
7:52 requirements and emits signals that are
7:54 typically hundreds to thousands of times
7:56 below the safety limits all well and
7:58 good but back in the schoolyard these
8:01 kids may have reason to wonder if it's
8:02 safe to go to school what do you want
8:04 done for them to turn it off do you feel
8:07 like there's anything you can do
8:10 no I'm pretty sure they won't listen to
8:12 us
8:14 kids as some schools in Canada race to
8:17 install Wi-Fi there are other schools
8:19 that are concerned about reports of
8:20 headaches hyperactivity and increased
8:23 heart rates in children should we be
8:25 concerned about Wireless technology and
8:28 what exactly does it admit
8:30 here again is our Carolyn
8:34 [Music]
8:35 Jarvis across the country these parents
8:38 teachers and experts are saying the same
8:41 thing there are children getting sick
8:43 and I don't think it's worth the risk I
8:45 really hate sending her to school given
8:48 the environment that she's in Wi-Fi is
8:50 toxic it's a different form of toxicity
8:52 but it's toxic to our bodies he would
8:54 often complain of heart palpitations or
8:57 chest pains i' start getting headaches
9:00 foggy vision and like just all weirded
9:04 out to expose my kids knowingly is very
9:08 frightening for me for me as a parent I
9:10 find it incredibly frustrating and scary
9:12 and sad that no one's even listening to
9:15 the concerns of the parents their
9:17 concern that radiation from Wireless
9:20 computers and this little Contraption
9:22 mounted in the hallways in classrooms of
9:24 schools can make students
9:26 sick it's Wi-Fi and health Canada says
9:29 there's no risk from the radiation it
9:31 emits that's just simply not true that's
9:34 simply not true Dr David Carpenter is a
9:36 world renowned expert in environmental
9:38 toxins in Albany New York and he says
9:41 the Canadian government is just plain
9:43 wrong what we do is look at the weight
9:46 of the evidence but that's what they
9:47 said they did they didn't the weight of
9:49 the evidence demonstrates clearly that
9:53 exposure to radio frequency radiation
9:55 the causes disease the evidence is
9:58 strongest for cancer cancer caused by
10:00 Wi-Fi emissions certainly doesn't add up
10:03 with health Canada's insistence that
10:05 Wi-Fi is safe so you're saying that
10:07 their science is faulty or their
10:08 analysis of the science is faulty their
10:10 science is faulty and certainly their
10:12 analysis is faulty you can selectively
10:14 look at at literature but there's been
10:18 evidence for harmful effects of
10:21 Microwave Radio Frequency Radiation for
10:24 30 or 40 years why choose to ignore that
10:27 how does that possibly benefit them
10:30 when you acknowledge you have a problem
10:33 and you're a government agency you have
10:34 to do something about
10:37 it Canada's government might not be
10:39 doing anything about concerns but in
10:41 France the town of Arville St Clair is
10:45 it's the first municipality in the world
10:47 to remove Wi-Fi from schools and public
10:52 buildings mayor rodolph tamas says he's
10:54 taking a precautionary approach because
10:56 he's not willing to gamble with the
10:58 health of children here
10:59 so this town that 10 years ago went
11:01 Wireless ahead of everyone else became
11:04 in April of 2009 the first to shut it
11:09 down Wi-Fi is an important tool he says
11:12 but there are places it simply shouldn't
11:14 be like schools so now all but two
11:17 schools here are Wi-Fi free and the town
11:20 plans to strip Wi-Fi from all its public
11:22 buildings by the end of the
11:27 year but a reveal s isn't returning to
11:30 the Dark Ages in fact it's once again on
11:33 The Cutting Edge of Technology it's
11:35 installed a state-of-the-art fiber optic
11:38 system that's faster more stable and
11:40 according to the people here safer aen
11:44 sander leads an awareness group against
11:46 Wireless Technologies people could see
11:49 that they were victims that it was not
11:51 that innocuous that some people really
11:53 suffered from this so it started a real
11:55 interrogation among the public and
11:57 people said that well if it's not
11:59 absolutely necessary why should we uh
12:01 use the thing and parents around here
12:03 are applauding the
12:06 change she says removing Wi-Fi is a good
12:09 thing for
12:10 [Applause]
12:12 students and while other European
12:14 countries might not be pulling Wi-Fi
12:16 they are taking a stand in 2007 Germany
12:19 recommended children limit their use of
12:21 Wi-Fi uncertain of its long-term effects
12:24 and in Britain a handful of public
12:26 schools decided independently to remove
12:28 it
12:29 but back in Canada there's no
12:31 precautionary approach Wi-Fi is going up
12:33 not coming down leaving students like
12:36 McKenzie honing with no good option go
12:38 to school and feel sick it's just kind
12:40 of weird it felt like my heart skipping
12:42 beats or don't go to school at all I
12:45 noticed that every time I like came home
12:47 for the weekend it start to get better
12:48 and by Sunday I'd feel normal no like
12:51 headaches or anything like that well
12:52 this is the petition MacKenzie's mom
12:54 Linda is fed up waiting for the
12:56 government to change its mind so she
12:58 started her own campaign hopeful more
13:01 parents will join her we don't have 10
13:03 years on this issue because the exposure
13:06 of radiation for the kids is is harmful
13:08 environmental health expert Dr Carpenter
13:11 says it's time we stop turning a blind
13:13 eye to the risk when you look at the
13:15 guidelines that have been put in place
13:16 by Health Canada do they go far enough
13:18 to protecting Canadians they certainly
13:21 do not these guidelines are based on a
13:24 fallacy a fallacy that according to Dr
13:27 Carpenter is putting children Children
13:29 at Risk it's appropriate for parents to
13:33 demand that Wi-Fi not be placed in
13:35 school not because we have proof at this
13:40 stage that it's harming the children but
13:43 because we have absolutely no evidence
13:46 that it's safe contrary to what any
13:48 government agency says and not heeding
13:51 the warnings of experts like Dr
13:53 Carpenter is leaving students like
13:55 Jeremiah feeling helpless I really am
13:57 nervous I don't really like school no
13:59 more do you used to like school I used
14:01 to love it I'd get mad if I missed a day
14:05 Dr Carpenter warns there may be many Mis
14:07 days or worse for students like Jeremiah
14:10 if change doesn't come soon you don't
14:13 want to wait until you can count the
14:15 bodies before you tell the public that
14:18 there is a serious potential of
14:21 harm and with regard to the issue of
14:24 Wi-Fi in schools this is exactly where
14:27 we are
